ILMI Leader Manual Launch June 20th

The ILMI Leader Manual was launched on the 20th of June and the energy in the room was palpable a big thank you to everyone who made it and especially to the guest speaker Mary Collins and video testimonial from Brian Dalton past participants of our Leader Manual training.

The chair Shelly Gaynor opened the event with an overview of the relevancy to everyday life of this resource. James Cawley ILMI policy officer gave the technical practicalities and it was his and Eileen Daly’s piloting of the training rollout for the Leader Manual that really brings this document to life.

ILMI’s CEO Damien Walshe spoke about the heart of the manual and the sterling work of pulling it all together by Susan O’Brien our super staff member in the West. Damien sketched out why this document is so important and how it came about the many Leaders who contributed and the authentic rights based Independent Living Philosophy underpinning the finished work. What is Woodhaven?

Woodhaven is accessible and supported holiday facility of the Multiple Sclerosis (MS) North West Therapy Centre Ltd. Woodhaven which is located on the First Sea Road, Sligo provides short-term holiday breaks for people with MS and other neurological conditions.

Where is Woodhaven?

Woodhaven is nestled into a quiet residential area between Sligo town centre and the bustling seaside village of Strandhill with many amenities and local attractions nearby. The bus town service departs from directly outside our door which brings you into the heart of Sligo town, Strandhill or Rosses Point. Woodhaven has five beautifully appointed single, twin/double and family bedrooms all ensuite, all which are fully accessible with a choice of profiling beds and overhead hoist if required. All of our rooms have TV and Wi-Fi for your use.

Cost of Woodhaven

Accommodation at Woodhaven is on a bed and breakfast basis at a charge of €75.00 per person per night. This includes 24 hour supports from our highly skilled and qualified staff to assist you with all your personal care needs. Or as another option you may wish to have a family member or friend accompany you on your holiday, rates advisable from Woodhaven. Each Guest is also furnished with their own personal call bell for the duration of their stay which allows our Guests to aces supports from our staff at all times.

An evening meal can be ordered from our extensive menu at an additional cost or alternatively there are many reasonably-priced restaurants, cafes and take-away services in Sligo town which you can avail of during your stay with us.

What can I do at woodhaven?

In addition to a supported holiday, guests can also avail of holistic services such as reflexology, foot care and massage in our onsite treatment room during their stay. However as Woodhaven is a holiday centre and not a medical facility, we are unable to accept guests who require a clinical supports that cannot be independently managed.

What is Hack Access Sligo?

Hack Access Sligo is a competition with a difference, that makes a difference! Competitors are asked to “hack” or solve everyday issues that lead to social exclusion. These issues or barriers are imposed on disabled people by attitudes or environments not designed with their needs in mind, so let’s change that!

Barriers to social inclusion can be obvious or subtle. Whether caused by environment, design, technology or attitude the aim is that participants come up with ways to change their world for the better!

What do I need to do to enter Hack Access Sligo?

All you have to do is go online to hackaccesssligo.com and get your free ticket. You can enter as a team (of up to 5 people) or as an individual (teams will be decided on Friday night).

Then turn up at IT Sligo, 5pm on Friday 15th February! Teams will be organised and ideas brainstormed. Saturday will be devoted to “hacking the problem” culminating in judging at the end of the day.

Students, graduates, professionals and social warriors are all encouraged to come along! Barriers exist in all shapes and sizes so no matter your skillset, if you would like to have some fun whilst doing some social good, then this is the competition for you!

Do I need an idea before I enter Hack Access Sligo?

No! Friday evening will be dedicated to giving participants every opportunity to brainstorm ideas. There will be speakers on the night that will give accounts of the social barriers that people experience. Participants are also encouraged to come armed with their own experiences, after all we are aiming to improve access for everyone!

Independent Living Training for people in receipt of Personal Assistance Services

The Independent Living Movement of Ireland (ILMI) recognises that leading our own Personal Assistance Service (PAS) is a complex role, which requires recognition of the unique relationship that exists between our PAs and us as Leaders. In response we have developed a distinctive training programme that recognises the challenge this presents and the information we need to take our first step toward Independent Living (IL).

Overview: ILMI’s Leader Training programme aims to put us back in control of our                       PAS. By providing us with a range of information on Independent Living                       and our role as a Leader it aims to give us the confidence to lead our                           services in an effective way.

Content: ILMI have developed a dedicated Leader Manual to assist us with                                  managing our PAS. Our Leader Training progamme will examine the                            content of that Manual with a specific focus on:
• What is Independent Living?
• What is a Personal Assistance Service?
• What does it mean to be a Leader?
• How can I manage the relationship between my service provider, PA and I?

• How can I effectively manage my relationship with my PA to get the most from my service?

Structure: This free participative training will be delivered as a one-day four hour                         training session. Training is delivered by a person with the lived                                     experience of managing their own PAS.

Participants: Our Leader Training is for any disabled person who is currently                                     using, or is actively seeking, a PAS to live independently. No previous                           training experience is required. To ensure effective participation a                                 maximum of fifteen participants can be facilitated at each venue.                                   Therefore pre-booking is essential.

Duration: Four hours including a 30 minute break for lunch, which is provided.
