What is a Leader?
Leader is the term used to describe a person with a disability who uses a personal assistant. The Leader directs the work of his or her Personal Assistant and exercises maximum control over how the service is organised, including recruiting, training and supervising the Personal Assistant.
What is a Personal Assistant?
A Personal Assistant (P.A.) is someone who helps a person with a disability to do things that they may not be able to do themselves. Personal assistance is the cornerstone of the Independent Living movement.
“Personal” means the P.A. works under instruction or to the agenda of the person with a disability. “Assistance” refers to the method of working; a PA’s role is to assist. They enable the person with a disability to make their own decisions and control their own life. Check out our personal assistant service page for more information.
How do I apply to be a Personal Assistant?
If you are want to apply to be a personal assistant please send you C.V. to LAPWD, Action Ability Centre, Mohill, Co. Leitrim. When recruiting we advertise in all local newspapers.
Do I have to be a Person with a Disability to become a member?
Absolutely not, there is no requirement for our members to have a disability
Do I have to use LAPWD Services to become a member?
You do not have to be availing of services to become a member. So there are no excuses not to become a member.
How do I become a member of LAPWD?
It's really easy, visit our become a member page. From there you can download and print LAPWD's membership form.
When you have completed the form please return it, along with your membership fee of only €5.00, to LAPWD, Action Ability Centre, Station Rd, Mohill, Co. Leitrim.
Can I organise Accessible Transport for myself and a friend?
Yes, providing you are a member and have booked in advance. The mini bus will pick you up from home (or where ever you chooses) and safely transport you to / from your destination.
What is a Wheelyboat
LAPWD in partnership with the Rinn-Shannon Angling club also based in Mohill have a wheelyboat which can accommodate People with Disabilities go on fishing trips,photography trips or just to enjoy the pleasures of nature. The Wheelyboat has been specially designed with a bow door that is hinged and lowers to form a ramp enabling 'roll-on, roll-off' access, to accommodate disabled people and wheelchair users in particular, easily and safely.
